How Usenet Works

Monday, April 30th, 2007

Excerpt from the book Electronic Mail by Jacob Palme

Usenet News is a distributed computer conferencing system. Conferences in Usenet News are called newsgroups, and messages are called articles.

The basic principle of Usenet News is that a local server handles most of the functionality. Usenet News standardizes two variants of the NNTP protocols: One for communication between adjacent servers, one for communication between a client and a server. Each server can download as much as it wants of what is available on any of the adjacent servers. Loop control is handled both by a trace list and a list of the Message-IDs of received messages stored by each server, so that the server can reject the same message coming back again. The procedure for distribution of news can be compared to pouring water onto a flat surface; the water flows out in all directions (see the figure below).

servers
“Pouring water” principle of Usenet News distribution

The figure below shows how new articles are forwarded from server to server in Usenet News. A server tells its adjacent servers which items it offers, the server requests those it has not already got via another route.

ihave
This figure shows how new articles are forwarded from server to server in Usenet News.

Information about a user, such as how much this user has seen, is stored in the client. The server need not even know which users are using it. There are many different user-interface softwares for Usenet News, Some of them, of course, do not provide all the available functions.

In addition, Usenet News provides an interesting functionality which restricts communication to only those members of a newsgroup who work in the same organization or live in the same area or country. This functionality, however, is not used very much, and its existence is controversial, since it means that different users will get different views of the same newsgroup.

Usenet news has a cancel command, which can delete messages already sent out. Only the author of the cancelled message and the local newsserver administrator is allowed to cancel a message. Since, however, it is very easy to fake your identity, this command poses an obvious security risk, and the command is known to have been used to cancel messages for political reasons. The command is also used (not quite appropriate) by cancelbots, robots (= automatic programs) which cancel obvious spams by identifying messages with the same content sent to many disparate newsgroups. Usenet news also often has a Supersedes header field, which refers from a new message to an old message. This header usually cancels the old message.

Obsoletes in X.400 has some similarities to Supersedes in Usenet News, and can also be used to get an effect similar to the cancel command, by obsoleting a message with an empty message. However, cancel in Usenet News really deletes messages, while obsoletes is information to the recipient UA, which need not cause deletion. Many UA-s store both the new and the old version, so that the recipient can choose to see the obsoleted version if he so wishes.

The most important restriction of Usenet News is that closed groups are not well supported.

The Usenet News protocol is called network news transfer protocol (NNTP) and is specified in RFC 977 [46]. The standard for the format of Usenet News articles is specified in RFC 1036 [19].

The table below lists the most common NNTP commands:

article [<Message-ID> | <Number>] Return text of designated article. If no parameter is given, the next article is returned. The current article pointer is put at the fetched article.
body [<Message-ID>| <Number>] As article, but only returns body
group <newsgroup> Go to the designated newsgroup
head [<Message-ID> | <Number>] As article, but only returns head
help Lists available commands
ihave <messageID> Informs the server of an available article. The server can then ask for the article or refuse it.
last Sets current article pointer to last message
available, return the number and Message-ID.
list [active | newsgroups | distributions | schema] Returns a list of valid newsgroups in the format:
group last first
newgroups <yymmdd hhmmss> ["GMT"] [<distributions>] List newgroups created since a certain datetime. “distributions” can be e.g. alt to only get newsgroups in the alt category.
newnews <newsgroups> <yymmdd hhmmss> ["GMT"] [<distributions>] List Message-ID of articles posted to one or more newsgroups after a specific time. newsgroups can be. e.g. net.*.unix to match more than one newsgroups. distributions checks for articles which also has this other newsgroup as recipient.
next Current article pointer is advanced. Returns number and Message-ID of current article.
post Submit a new article from a client.
slave Tells the server that this is not a user client, it is a slave server. (May give priority treatment.)
stat [<Message-ID> | <Number>] As article, but only returns Message-ID. Used to set the current article pointer.

There is a problem with the newsgroups header in a message sent via e-mail. Different systems use this header in two different ways:

To indicate that this message has also been sent via Usenet news to the indicated newsgroups.
To indicate that this is a personal reply, sent only via e-mail, to a message posted on the indicated newsgroups.

Because of this problem, it is better to use the Posted-To header in e-mail to indicate that a message has also been sent to certain newsgroups, and e-mail recipients should ignore any newsgroups heading in an e-mail message.

Traditionally, Usenet News has not been using the MIME standard for binary attachments like images. Instead of BASE64, UUENCODING is often used in Usenet News to include binary attachments, even if MIME is slowly gaining foothold also in Usenet News. Because of message size restrictions, large attachments are often split into several messages in Usenet News. This also occurs in e-mail, but is more frequent in Usenet News, since some Usenet News servers try to save space by not accepting articles above a certain size limit. Both MIME and Usenet News have methods of indicating how a client can automatically combine parts into a complete message or attachments.

alt.binaries.programming

——————————————————————————–

Welcome to the FAQ for alt.binaries.programming. Please read the information here before asking any questions in the group. If this file does not answer your questions feel free to ask in the group and we may just add your question/s here to help others.

What is a FAQ and why should I read it?
What’s the first thing I should do?
What server should I use?
What is the best program to use to download all these files?
How do I post in the group?
What are rar, arj, zip, ace, diz, and nfo files?
How do I request something?
What can and can’t I put in my message?
What happens if I abuse the FAQ?
What is a FAQ and why read it?
FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. Reading this FAQ will help you learn about what to do and what not to do in the group alt.binaries.cbts. Why do some of these rules seem so strict? We want people in the group to enjoy themselves.

——————————————————————————–

What’s the first thing I should do?
Simply put, watch and learn. Most people on Usenet are experienced and do not appreciate someone coming into a group and making something enjoyable a living hell. Then read the FAQ and when you’re done read it again. If you have any questions that are not covered by the FAQ feel free to ask them and they may be included in this FAQ.

——————————————————————————–

What server should i use?
Any server will do, as long as it’s a GOOD server. This will benefit you in many ways. You will get complete posts, you will get them quickly, and you won’t have to ask constantly for reposts. If you use your ISP’s news server it may not be good enough. Many ISP’s only keep posts on binary groups for 2 days, while some premium servers listed below often guarantee to keep posts for a minimum of 5 or more days.

If you find you are missing about 5 to 10 percent of the posts, or posts are no longer available after 48 hours I would suggest looking into a few of the premium servers listed on this site.

A list of servers can be found at http://www.usenetplus.com/browse/usenet-providers/30-1.html

——————————————————————————–

What is the best program to use to download all these files?
While there are a number of programs to download from usenet (called clients) there are only a few that are worthwhile. Outlook Express is not one of those programs. I would suggest for downloading large amounts of binary files (attachments) that you go with a program called Newsbin Pro. Newsbin Pro mainly downloads binaries and can be used to share bandwidth between news servers and to download parts from multiple servers (great for getting missing pieces). It is the best program for downloading binaries and can be used for posting as well. The next best program would be Agent. Agent is an “all around” type of program which can download binaries as well as read and post text messages.

Newsbin Pro can be downloaded at http://www.usenetplus.com/detail-10-newsbin-pro.html
Agent can be downloaded at http://www.usenetplus.com/detail-1082-agent.html

——————————————————————————–
How do I post in the group?
First of all if this is your first time posting I would suggest you make a test post in alt.binaries.test.

Second I would suggest that you get a copy of Power Post or Agent Post if you would like to post anything.

Only post files relevant to the name of the group, files that are allowed are programming languages and environments, programmnig helpers and assistants, source code, help file creation utilities, programming tutorials or CBT’s, amd other files related to programming and compiling an application. Files that are not allowed include freeware (posting links for the URL is acceptable) and shareware unless it already cracked or contains a working crack.

Posting large files or CD images should be done over a few days to allow slower users to be able to download the files. As an estimate, post approximately 100 megs a day.

Reposts generally should not be made for at least five days. This will help to keep posts in order, help retention time on news servers, and allow everyone to get the files they need/want.

——————————————————————————–

What are rar, par, nzb, arj, zip, 001, ace, diz, and nfo files?

A .nfo and a .diz file are simply text documents. Open these with notepad or wordpad. These usually contain important information about the file you are downloading.

A .par file and it’s associated files (.p01 .p02 etc) are parity file that are used to repair broken, damaged or missing files. More information is available at http://www.parfiles.net

A .nzb file is a single downloadable file used to download one or more parts of a multipart binary. They are intended to save a user from having to search for articles on usenet. You can find info on nzb files and clients that can use nzb files at http://www.usenetplus.com

A .rar file and it’s associated files (.r01 .r02 etc) are compressed files made with WinRAR. WinRAR is available at http://www.rarsoft.com.

A .arj file and it’s associated files (.a01 .a02 etc) are compressed files made with Winarj. Winarj is available at http://www.jps.net/ilmaestro/Index.html.

A .zip file is compressed files made with Winzip with a .zip extension. Winzip is available at http://www.winzip.com.

A .ace file and it’s associated files (.c01 .c02 etc) are compressed files made with WinAce. WinAce is available at http://www.winace.com.

A .001 file and it’s associated files (.002 .003 etc) are compressed files. These are quite commonly compressed with WinRAR although any compression format could have been used. Ask the poster of the file what format it is in.

——————————————————————————–

How do i request something?
To request a file send a normal message to the group and in the subject type

REQUEST - File name - thank you

There is no need to put anything in the message body. Make sure you say please and/or thank you in your post. Have patience as some people may have the file you want, but have already posted a large amount recently. Do not post a request more than once a day as well.

——————————————————————————–

What can and can’t i put in my message?
There are a number of items with posting and messages. A few of them are no swearing, no racial slurs, no sexism, don’t type in all caps, no funky text (eleet speak as it’s called), no religion, no spam, no advertisements, no banner sites, no forced URL’s, and no discrimination. Please remember this is a general group, keep it clean for the under 18’s. Also no test posts are permitted. Please use alt.binaries.test for testing.

——————————————————————————–

What happens if I abuse the rules in this FAQ?
There are a few things that can and/or will happen. Firstly you may get flamed by the others in the group. Secondly you may get reported to your ISP for abuse of the terms and services of your account. Most ISP’s state that you must follow the rules set forth in a FAQ for a newsgroup and violating that FAQ is considered abuse and you may lose your account.

How do I post in the group?
First of all if this is your first time posting I would suggest you make a test post in alt.binaries.test.

Second we discourage users from posting full movies in this group. This news group is intended for Shadowrealm members to distribute movies to the public. If you do want to post however you may do so. Also posting fills for other users is greatly appreciated as it helps us and others.

The only format that is permitted for posting in alt.binaries.movies.shadowrealm is nAVi. Posting any other format (mpg, rm, divx, images) is strictly prohibited. Posting warez is also prohibited UNLESS it is specifically for usenet downloading software, uncompression programs, approved SmR Video players (WMP, Winamp) and CRC checking utilities.

File limits are approximately 200 megs per day per person. Please do not post more than this.

Reposts generally should not be made for between 3 and 5 five days. This will help to keep posts in order, help retention time on news servers, and allow everyone to get the files they need/want.

You don’t own usenet, I’ll do what I want
What is a FAQ and why read it?

FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. Reading this FAQ will help you learn about what to do and what not to do in the group alt.binaries.movies.shadowrealm. Why do some of these rules seem so strict? We want people in the group to enjoy themselves.

——————————————————————————–

Then read the FAQ and when you’re done read it again. If you have any questions that are not covered by the FAQ feel free to ask them and they may be included in this FAQ.

——————————————————————————–

What server should I use? Can you give me one?

Any server will do, as long as it’s a GOOD server. This will benefit you in many ways. You will get complete posts, you will get them quickly, and you won’t have to ask constantly for reposts. If you find you are missing about 5 to 10 percent of the posts, or posts are no longer available after 48 hours I would suggest looking into a few of the premium servers.

We do NOT hand out open servers. If you are too cheap to pay 8 dollars a month then it’s your problem. Not ours. You can find information on free server all across the net, and if you look hard enough you might even find some on this site.

A list of servers can be found at http://www.usenetplus.com/browse/usenet-providers/30-1.html

——————————————————————————–

What is the best program to use to download all these files?

Newsbin Pro can be downloaded at http://www.usenetplus.com/detail-10-newsbin-pro.html
Agent can be downloaded at http://www.usenetplus.com/detail-1082-agent.html

——————————————————————————–
How do I post in the group?

We don’t want you to post movies in the group. If you have some urge to post a movie please post it in alt.binaries.movies. Posting fills is of course fine and greatly appreciated.

If you would like to post an older release please post it to alt.binaries.movies.shadowrealm.repost.

This news group is intended for Shadowrealm members to distribute movies to the public.

The only format that is permitted for posting in alt.binaries.movies.shadowrealm is nAVi (SmR avi), this includes naivme (sounds similar to anime). Posting any other format (mpg, rm, divx (avi), images) is strictly prohibited. Posting warez is also prohibited UNLESS it is specifically for usenet downloading software, uncompression programs, approved SmR Video players (WMP, Winamp) and CRC checking utilities.

File limits are approximately 200 megs per day per person. Please do not post more than this.

Reposts should not be made in this newsgroup, that is what alt.binaries.movies.shadowrealm.repost is for.

——————————————————————————–

So what is this group for if you don’t want me to post?

This group is intended for 0day releases of SmR (Shadowrealm) movies. it is not for posting movies we have already posted, or releases older than 7 days.

——————————————————————————–

Why do you people ignore my requests?

If you have spammed for a fill (posted more than one request per day) then you were probably kill filtered. You were stupid to spam in the first place and you deserve to be ignored. if you didn’t spam and your request was ignored you probably didn’t post your request as per the posters 00 file or nfo.

A .001 file and it’s associated files (.002 .003 etc) are compressed files. These are quite commonly compressed with WinRAR although any compression format could have been used. Ask the poster of the file what format it is in.

——————————————————————————–

How do I request something?

To request a fill send a normal message to the group in plain text and in the subject type

Name Of Poster - Request File name - thank you
Example - Bob please repost - (smr)up_in_smoke-dvd(1of2).r00 - Thanks

There is no need to put anything in the message body. Try to say please and/or thank you in your post, people don’t like to help others that simply demand. Have patience as some people may have the file you want, but have already posted a large amount recently. Do not post a request more than once a day. Posting more than once in a 24 hour period is considered spam and will be dealt with accordingly.

We do NOT repost movies, we do NOT repost a full half of a movie. We may not even post your fill requests if you are the only user requesting them, or if you are requesting large amounts of fills. If that is the case then get a better news server.

——————————————————————————–

What can and can’t I put in my post?

There are a number of items with posting and messages. A few of them are no swearing, no racial slurs, no sexism, don’t type in all caps, no funky text (eleet speak as it’s called), no religion, no spam, no advertisements, no banner sites, no forced URL’s, no discrimination, no flooding, no flames and of course NO mpg, rm, divx (avi), images or warez.

Secondly you may get reported to your iSP for abuse of the terms and services of your account and/or this FAQ. Most iSP’s state that you must follow the rules set forth in a FAQ for a newsgroup and violating that FAQ is considered abuse and you may lose your account.

——————————————————————————–

How do I join your group? I want to post/be a courier/leech/whatever?

The simple answer is you don’t. We don’t use couriers, you can leech from usenet, we don’t need posters, and whatever’s can go away.

——————————————————————————–

What if i have something to offer?

If you truly have something to offer the group you should know how to contact us. We are always looking for hardware suppliers. See above question for posters/couriers. VCD suppliers are not needed at this time. If we ever do have need of any one of the above we will advertise that fact.

——————————————————————————–

You don’t own usenet, I’ll do what I want

You’re right, we don’t own usenet. But we use this group to post our releases to. We don’t need to do it, and no one deserves these movies anyways. If people insist on abusing the newsgroup we will announce a stop post for a period of time. We have done this already and are willing to do it again.

Then read the FAQ and when you’re done read it again. If you have any questions that are not covered by the FAQ feel free to ask them and they may be included in this FAQ.

How do I post in the group?
First of all if this is your first time posting I would suggest you make a test post in alt.binaries.test.

Second I would suggest that you get a copy of Pecks Power Post or Agent Post if you would like to post anything.

Only post files relevant to the name of the group, files that are allowed are CBT’s, Transcenders, testing software for any type of computer certification and similar binaries.

More information is available at http://www.parfiles.net/

WinRAR is available at http://www.rarsoft.com/.

A .arj file and it’s associated files (.a01 .a02 etc) are compressed files made with Winarj. Winarj is available at http://www.jps.net/ilmaestro/Index.html.

A .zip file is compressed files made with Winzip with a .zip extension. Winzip is available at http://www.winzip.com/. Winrar is also able to open .zip files

A .ace file and it’s associated files (.c01 .c02 etc) are compressed files made with WinAce. WinAce is available at http://www.winace.com/.

A .001 file and it’s associated files (.002 .003 etc) are compressed files. These are quite commonly compressed with WinRAR although any compression format could have been used. Ask the poster of the file what format it is in.
